Digestive, liver and pancreatic conditions

What Dr. Roy Chaudhuri sees and treats, explained in plain language.

01

Food pipe and stomach

Problems of swallowing, acid and the upper digestive tract.

Acid reflux (GERD)

Heartburn, sour fluid rising into the throat, or a long-standing cough caused by stomach acid flowing back into the food pipe.

Swallowing difficulty and achalasia

Food sticking or coming back up after swallowing. Investigated with endoscopy and manometry, and treated with procedures such as POEM where needed.

Stomach and duodenal ulcers

Burning pain in the upper abdomen, sometimes with bleeding, often linked to H. pylori infection or regular painkiller use.

Indigestion and functional dyspepsia

Persistent fullness, bloating or discomfort after meals when no ulcer or other structural cause is found.

02

Small and large bowel

Long-term bowel symptoms, inflammation and absorption problems.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Recurrent abdominal pain with bloating, constipation, loose stools or both, with no structural disease on testing.

Inflammatory bowel disease

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease: long-term inflammation of the bowel causing diarrhoea, blood in the stool, pain and weight loss.

Celiac disease and other enteropathies

Damage to the lining of the small intestine, in celiac disease triggered by gluten, leading to diarrhoea, anaemia and poor absorption of nutrients.

Chronic constipation and motility disorders

Long-standing difficulty passing stool. Manometry can show whether the muscles and nerves of the bowel are working together.

Chronic diarrhoea

Loose stools that continue for weeks and need a proper search for the cause.

GI bleeding

Vomiting blood, black stools or blood in the stool. It needs prompt assessment, and the source can often be found and treated through an endoscope.

03

Pancreas and bile ducts

An area of special interest, including complex and referred cases.

Acute pancreatitis

Sudden, severe upper abdominal pain from inflammation of the pancreas, most often caused by gallstones or alcohol.

Chronic pancreatitis

Long-term damage to the pancreas causing recurring pain, poor digestion and, in some people, diabetes.

Pancreatic cysts and fluid collections

Fluid-filled sacs in or around the pancreas. Endoscopic ultrasound helps tell which can be left alone and which need drainage or follow-up.

Bile duct stones

Stones that pass from the gallbladder into the bile duct, causing pain, jaundice or infection. Usually removed by ERCP.

Bile duct narrowing and blockage

Strictures that hold back the flow of bile and cause jaundice or itching. Assessed with EUS and treated by ERCP, with stenting where needed.

04

Liver

Metabolic, viral and long-term liver disease.

Fatty liver and metabolic liver disease

Fat building up in the liver, commonly alongside excess weight, diabetes or high cholesterol. Often silent in its early stages.

Hepatitis B and C

Viral infections of the liver that may cause no symptoms for years but can lead to scarring if left untreated.

Cirrhosis

Scarring of the liver from long-term damage, which can lead to fluid in the abdomen, bleeding and confusion.

Jaundice

Yellowing of the eyes and skin. It is a sign rather than a diagnosis, and the cause needs to be found.

These should be assessed without delay.
